The Tombstone
By Vance Polton
You've all probably seen a photo of it or at least heard about Carl's headstone.

The "Death: Overwork at Fish Hatchery" tombstone. But what do you know about the man whose grave is marked by that stone? Most likely next to nothing. Maybe you remember seeing Carl's picture at Statewide? Maybe?
I thought we could spend some time today and learn who Carl Albin Anderson was. Because really he deserves to be known for more than a catchy phrase on a headstone. I have attached what I know of Carl's story and as a bonus thrown in some information on the Curlew, the sternwheeler paddleboat that Carl and the boys used for fish rescue operations over at Bellevue. That boat was very important to them as they would spend weeks, actually a few months, on her every year conducting fish rescue operations out of the Federal Government's Fish Rescue Station over at Bellevue. Wait, you thought Carl worked at Manchester? Oh no, Carl's main duties were over at Bellevue, a substation to the Manchester National Fish Hatchery. He only worked at the Manchester hatchery during the "Off Season".
